Detailed Commentary
1.26. Explanation: 'Tatra Apashyat... Senayoh Ubhayoh Api' — When Bhagavan told Arjuna to behold the assembled Kurus on this battlefield, Arjuna's gaze fell upon his kinsmen situated in both armies. He saw that positioned for battle in those armies stood his paternal uncles, such as Bhurishrava and others, who were like fathers to him. Pitamahas (grandfathers) like Bhishma, Somadatta, and others stood there. Acharyas (teachers and family preceptors) like Drona, Kripa, and others stood there. Maternal uncles like Purujit, Kuntibhoja, Shalya, Shakuni, and others stood there. Brothers like Bhima, Duryodhana, and others stood there. Sons of mine and my brothers, such as Abhimanyu, Ghatotkacha, Lakshmana (Duryodhana's son), and others stood there. Sons of Lakshmana and others stood there, who were my grandsons. Friends of Duryodhana, like Ashwatthama and others, stood there, and likewise, friends from my own side also stood there. Fathers-in-law like Drupada, Shaibya, and others stood there. Also present were Suhrids (well-wishers), like Satyaki, Kritavarma, and others, who desired the welfare of their respective sides without any specific cause. Connection: What Arjuna did after seeing all his kinsmen is described in the following verse.
