Detailed Commentary
1.9. Explanation: 'Annye cha bahavaḥ shūrā madarthe tyakta-jīvitāḥ' — Besides the valiant warriors whose names I have mentioned thus far from our army, there are many other heroic Mahārathīs in our forces, such as Bāhlīk, Śalya, Bhagadatta, and Jayadratha. These have come here having sacrificed their lives for my welfare, to fight on my behalf. They are ready to die for my victory, but they will not retreat from battle. How can I express my gratitude to them before you? 'Nānāśastra-praharanaḥ sarve yuddha-viśāradāḥ' — All these individuals are proficient in wielding various types of weapons (śastras) like swords, maces (gadā), tridents (triśūl), and others. They also know well how to use missiles (astras) such as arrows (bāṇa), javelins (tomar), and spears (śakti). They are also adept and expert in the art of warfare (yuddhakalā), understanding how to conduct battle, with what tactics and strategies, and how to array the army. When Dronāchārya remained silent after hearing Duryodhana's words, Sanjaya explains in the upcoming verse what thoughts arose in Duryodhana's mind due to his cunning failing to achieve its purpose.
