Bhagavad Gita Chapter 10, Verse 26

English Translation

Among all trees (I am) the Asvatha (peepul), and Narada among the divine sages. Among the dandharvas [A class of demigods regarded as the musicians of gods.] (I am) Citraratha; among the perfected ones, the sage Kapila.

Detailed Commentary

The Ashvattha (Peepal) is a unique tree. It grows everywhere, be it a mountain rock or a house wall. The worship of the Ashvattha tree holds great glory. In Ayurveda, the Ashvattha is mentioned as a cure for many ailments. For these reasons, the Lord has declared the Ashvattha as His own manifestation. Among the Devarsis (divine sages), Narada Muni has a special identity. Narada Muni acts according to the Lord's will and plans the Lord's divine pastimes (Lilas). Therefore, Narada Muni is called the mind of the Lord. He continuously sings the glories of the Lord, holding his Vina. Narada Muni inspired Valmiki and Vyasaji to compose great scriptures like the Ramayana and the Bhagavata. Everyone respects his words and seeks his counsel. Many of his virtues are described in the Mahabharata. The Lord has declared him as His own manifestation. The musicians of heaven are called Gandharvas, and Chitraratha is prominent among them. Chitraratha taught music to Arjuna. Being the foremost among the Gandharvas, the Lord has declared Chitraratha as His own manifestation. Siddhas (perfected beings) are of two types: those who attain perfection through spiritual practice (sadhana) and those who are inherently perfected from birth. Kapila Muni is an inherently perfected being (Janma-Siddha), and his principles are those of the Samkhya philosophy. Therefore, the Lord has declared him as His own manifestation. The extraordinary distinction seen in all these manifestations is fundamentally that of the Lord Himself. Therefore, the seeker's gaze should always remain fixed on the Lord.
