Bhagavad Gita Chapter 10, Verse 3

English Translation

He who knows Me-the birthless, the beginningless, and the great Lord of the worlds, he, the undeluded one among mortals, becomes freed from all sins.

Detailed Commentary

10.3. Commentary – 'Whoever knows Me as unborn, beginningless, and the great Lord of all worlds' – In the previous verse, the manifestation of Bhagavan was not discussed. Fully comprehending this subject is not within human capacity, but one can understand as much as is conducive to one's welfare. It is essential to know that Bhagavan is *ajanmā* (unborn). He is *anādi* (beginningless), meaning beyond the cycle of time. He is the great Ishwara (Lord) of all *lokas* (worlds), meaning the governance of Svarga (heaven), Prithvi (earth), Pātāla (underworld), and all their beings rests in Bhagavan's hands. Thus, by believing this with *shraddha* (faith) and conviction, there remains no doubt about Bhagavan being *ajanmā* (unborn), *avināśī* (imperishable), and *lokamaheśvara* (the great Lord of all worlds). 'Among mortals, he who is undeluded is liberated from all sins' – How does a person become free from sins by accepting Bhagavan as *ajanmā*, *avināśī*, and *lokamaheśvara*? Bhagavan is immutable. The world is transient and ever-changing. One who understands Bhagavan and the perishable nature of this world overcomes the feelings of 'I' and 'mine'. Such an *asammūḍha* (undeluded) person alone truly comprehends Bhagavan and becomes free from sins. All his *karmas* are destroyed. It is essential for humans to experience reality, not merely to rote learn. *Asammūḍhatā* (undeludedness) means that the body is never permanent, and nothing exists independently of Paramātmā. To comprehend this reality is *asammūḍhatā*. Such a person understands Bhagavan's *saguṇa-nirguṇa* (with attributes-without attributes), *sākāra-nirākāra* (with form-without form) aspects, and has no doubt in His *līlā* (divine play). Connection – The supreme teaching that Bhagavan commanded to be heard in the first verse is now being elaborated upon in the next three verses.
