Detailed Commentary
'Bṛhatsāma among Sāmāni' – In the Sāmaveda, there is a chanting melody (gīti) called Bṛhatsāma, which extols Paramātmā in the form of Indra. It is a special stotra (hymn) in the Atirātra Yajna. Due to its supremacy within the Sāmaveda, Bhagavān has declared it as His vibhūti (divine manifestation). 'Gāyatrī among Chhandas' (metres) – Among all the metrical verses (ṛcās) of the Vedas, Gāyatrī holds primary importance. It is called Veda Jananī (Mother of the Vedas) because the Vedas are said to have manifested from it. The Smṛtis and Śāstras greatly extol the glory of Gāyatrī. In Gāyatrī, the essence (svarūpa), prayer, and meditation are all directed towards Paramātmā, leading to the attainment of Paramātmā. Therefore, Bhagavān has declared it as His vibhūti. 'Mārgaśīrṣa among Māsas' (months) – The grain by which all living beings sustain themselves originates in the month of Mārgaśīrṣa. In this month, yajnas (sacrifices) are also performed with the new grain. During the Mahābhārata era, the new year commenced with this month. Owing to these distinct qualities, Bhagavān has declared Mārgaśīrṣa as His vibhūti. 'Kusumākara (Spring) among Ṛtus' (seasons) – In the Vasanta ṛtu (spring season), trees, creepers, and other flora adorn themselves with flowers and leaves even without rain. In this season, there is neither excessive heat nor excessive cold. Therefore, Bhagavān has referred to the Vasanta ṛtu as His vibhūti. The greatness and distinctiveness found in all these vibhūtis belong solely to Bhagavān. Hence, contemplation should be directed exclusively towards Bhagavān.
