Bhagavad Gita Chapter 11, Verse 53

English Translation

Not through the Vedas, not by austerity, not by gifts, nor even by sacrifice can I be seen in this form as you have seen Me.

Detailed Commentary

**11.53. Explanation** 'दृष्टवानसि मां यथा' – You have seen My four-armed form (chatur-bhuj roop) only by My grace. This means that My vision (darshan) is possible solely through My grace (kripa), not through any merit or qualification. 'नाहं वेदैर्न तपसा न दानेन न चेज्यया शक्य एवंविधो द्रष्टुम्' – It is a principle that whatever is purchased for a price is worth less than that price. For example, if a watch is sold for a hundred rupees, it must have been acquired for less. Similarly, the study of the Vedas, penance (tapasya), charity (dana), sacrificial rites (yajna), etc., do not lead to the attainment of Bhagavan. Bhagavan cannot be 'bought' through any action (karma) or qualification. Arjuna also said that there is none equal to You in the three worlds (tri-loki), so how could anyone be superior to You? This implies that one cannot claim authority over You without being Your equal. One who possesses greater merit in worldly matters can influence others, but Bhagavan cannot be bought with any object or person. His attainment is possible only through Bhagavan's grace (kripa). Bhagavan's grace (kripa) is received when a person surrenders all their means (sadhan) to Bhagavan and experiences their complete helplessness (nirbalta). When one, completely surrendered (samarpit), calls out to Bhagavan, then Bhagavan manifests (pragat). The rarity (durlabhata) mentioned in this verse is for the four-armed form (chatur-bhuj roop), not for the Cosmic Form (Vishwaroop). If it were to be taken for the Cosmic Form (Vishwaroop), it would constitute the fault of redundancy (punarukti dosha), as the rarity of the Vishwaroop has already been stated in the forty-eighth verse. **Connection (Sambandha)**: When no one can attain You through any means (sadhan), qualification, or material, then how are You attained – Bhagavan provides the answer to this in the following verse.
