Bhagavad Gita Chapter 11, Verse 6

English Translation

See the Adiyas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the two Asvins and the Maruts. O scion of the Bharata dynasty, behold also the many wonders not seen before.

Detailed Commentary

"Behold the Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, Aśvinau, and also the Maruts." – The twelve 'Ādityas,' sons of Aditi, are Dhātā, Mitra, Aryamā, Shukra, Varuṇa, Anśa, Bhaga, Vivasvān, Pūṣā, Savitā, Tvaṣṭā, and Viṣṇu. The eight Vasus are Dhara, Dhruva, Soma, Aha, Anila, Anala, Pratyūṣa, and Prabhāsa. The eleven 'Rudras' are Hara, Bahurūpa, Tryambaka, Aparājita, Vṛṣākapi, Shambhu, Kapardī, Raivatamṛgavyādha, Sharva, and Kapālī. The 'Aśvinī Kumāras' are two; they are the physicians of the Devas. The forty-nine 'Maruts' are Sattvajyoti, Āditya, Satyajyoti, Tiryagjyoti, Sajyoti, Jyotiṣmān, Harita, Ṛtajit, Satyajit, Suṣeṇa, Senajit, Satyamitra, Abhimitra, Harimitra, Kṛta, Satya, Dhruva, Dhartā, Vidhartā, Vidhāraya, Dhvānta, Dhuni, Ugra, Bhīma, Abhiyu, Sākṣipa, Īdṛka, Anyādṛka, Yādṛka, Pratikṛta, Ṛka, Samiti, Saṁrambha, Īdṛkṣa, Puruṣa, Anyādṛkṣa, Cetasa, Samitā, Samidṛkṣa Pratidṛkṣa, Marutī, Sarata, Deva, Disha, Yajuḥ, Anudṛk, Sāma, Mānuṣa, and Viśa. Behold all these in My Virāṭ Rūpa (Cosmic Form). The twelve Ādityas, eight Vasus, eleven Rudras, and two Aśvinīkumāras—these thirty-three *koṭi* (thirty-three types or categories) of deities are chief among all deities. The name of the Marutgaṇas also appears among the deities, but those forty-nine Marutgaṇas are considered separate from these thirty-three types of deities, because they all became Devas from Daityas (demons). Therefore, Bhagavān Himself mentioned the Marutgaṇas separately by using the term 'tathā' (and also). "Behold, O Bhārata, many forms never seen before, full of wonders." – You have never before seen these forms with your eyes, heard of them with your ears, contemplated them with your mind, or imagined them with your intellect. Your attention has never been drawn towards these forms. Now behold directly such numerous forms, never seen before. Upon seeing these forms, one is filled with wonder, exclaiming, "Oh! Such forms of Bhagavān exist!" Behold such astonishing forms. Context: When Bhagavān commands Arjuna to behold the Vishvarūpa, Arjuna might wonder, "Where should I see this form?" Therefore, Bhagavān says—
