Detailed Commentary

14.26. Explanation: In verses nineteen and twenty, Bhagavan had described the means to transcend the Gunas. Then, in verse twenty-one, Arjuna inquired about the means to become *Gunatita* (beyond the Gunas). This suggests that Arjuna wished to know further remedies. Therefore, understanding Arjuna as a devotee, Bhagavan revealed to him the path of *Bhakti* (devotion). “*Mām ca yo'vyabhicāreṇa bhaktiyogena sevate*” (And he who serves Me with unwavering devotion) — These words allude to the worshipper (*Upāsaka*), the worshipped (*Upāsya*), and the act of worship (*Upāsanā*). The term '*yaḥ*' refers to the worshipper, '*mām*' to the worshipped, and '*avyabhicāreṇa bhaktiyogena sevate*' denotes the act of worship. '*Avyabhicāreṇa*' signifies not relying on anything else. This implies remaining aloof from worldly supports and also not depending on paths like *Jnana Yoga*, *Karma Yoga*, etc. '*Bhaktiyogena*' means having only Bhagavan as one's support, refuge, and faith. The word '*sevate*' means to render devotion to Bhagavan, to worship Him, and to take refuge in Him. To act in accordance with His will. One who takes exclusive refuge in Bhagavan with *ananyabhava* (unwavering singular devotion) does not need to actively transcend the Gunas; this happens spontaneously by Bhagavan's grace. *Brahmabhūyāya kalpate* (becomes fit for becoming Brahman) — He transcends the Gunas and becomes worthy of attaining *Brahma*. Bhagavan has spoken of *Bhakti* here, so instead of mentioning *Brahma-prāpti* (attainment of Brahman), He ought to have spoken of His own attainment. However, Arjuna had inquired about the means to become *Gunatita*, therefore Bhagavan presented His *Bhakti* as the means to *Brahma-prāpti*. It is stated in the scriptures that one who worships Bhagavan does not need to undertake any other means for the realization of spiritual insights; this occurs spontaneously. Bhagavan is stating the same here: one who serves Me through *avyabhicāri Bhaktiyoga* (unwavering devotional Yoga) does not need to perform any other practice to become worthy of *Brahma-prāpti*. Such a devotee is not content with *Brahma-prāpti*; his sole sentiment remains how Bhagavan may be pleased. The same ultimate reality (*Tattva*) that is attained through *Jnana Yoga*, *Karma Yoga*, etc., is also attained through *Bhaktiyoga*. Despite the differences in the means (*sādhanas*), there is no distinction in the attainment of the ultimate reality. Connection: How one who worships Bhagavan becomes worthy of *Brahma-prāpti* is answered in the subsequent verse.
