Transliteration

mūḍhagrāheṇātmano yatpīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ . parasyotsādanārthaṃ vā tattāmasamudāhṛtam ||17-19||

English Translation

That austerity which is undertaken with a foolish intent, by causing pain to oneself, or for the destruction of others-that is said to be born of tamas.

Detailed Commentary

17.19. Explanation: Tapas performed with delusion, inflicting pain upon oneself, is Tamasic Tapas. Tamasic individuals are predominated by delusion, hence they consider causing distress to the body and mind as Tapas. They also perform Tapas to cause suffering to others. Their conviction is that to acquire power, even if they must endure hardship, others must certainly be destroyed. A Tamasic person may also undertake Tapas like fasting or enduring cold and heat, specifically to inflict suffering upon others. Such Tapas is called Tamasic. The very purpose of a Tamasic person is to cause distress and harm to others. Therefore, Tapas undertaken with such an objective is called Tamasic. Now, in the subsequent three verses, the Lord describes, in order, the characteristics of Sattvic, Rajasic, and Tamasic Dana.
