Transliteration

rāgī karmaphalaprepsurlubdho hiṃsātmako.aśuciḥ . harṣaśokānvitaḥ kartā rājasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ ||18-27||

English Translation

The agent who has attachment, who is desirous of the results of actions, covetous, cruel by nature, unclean and subject to joy and sorrow is declared to be possessed of rajas.

Detailed Commentary

**Ragi (Attached):** Due to *Rajoguna*, the Lord has placed *Ragi* first among the characteristics of a *Rajasic Kartā*. *Raga* signifies the mind's clinging to actions, their fruits, and objects. One whose being is colored by such things becomes a *Ragi*. **Karmaphalaprepsuh (Desirous of fruits of action):** A *Rajasic* person performs any action solely out of a desire for its outcome. For example, undertaking *Anushthana* (rituals), *Dana* (charity), or consuming medicines with the expectation of wealth, honor, acclaim, and happiness in the hereafter. **Lubdhah (Greedy):** A *Rajasic* person is never content with what they acquire; they always crave more, be it respect, glory, wealth, or the expansion of their family. **Himsatmakah (Harmful):** Driven by self-interest, such an individual disregards the suffering of others. They accumulate and indulge in material possessions, which often kindles envy in the hearts of others. **Ashucih (Impure):** The objects collected by a *Ragi* person become impure. The very atmosphere of the place where they live also becomes impure. After their demise, no one desires to keep their garments. **Harshashokanvitah (Afflicted by joy and sorrow):** This doer remains entangled in states of joy and sorrow when encountering successes and failures. **Kartā Rajasah Parikīrtitah (Such a doer is declared as *Rajasic*).**
