O Arjuna, as a blazing fire reduces pieces of wood to ashes, similarly the fire of Knowledge reduces all actions to ashes.
Detailed Commentary
4.37. Explanation -- In the previous verse, Bhagavan spoke of crossing the ocean of all sins by means of the boat of *Jnana* (knowledge). This raises the question: if the ocean of sins persists, then what becomes of it? Therefore, Bhagavan provides another analogy: just as a blazing fire burns wood and similar substances to ashes, leaving nothing behind, so too does the fire of *Jnana* completely incinerate sins, leaving no trace whatsoever. The fire of *Jnana* consumes all *karma* – *Sanchita*, *Prarabdha*, and *Kriyamana*. Upon the dawn of *Jnana*, there is a complete severance of connection with all *karma*. When this connection is broken, the independent existence of the *Samsara* (world) is no longer experienced; only the essence of *Paramatma* (the Supreme Self) remains. Indeed, all actions are performed by *Prakriti* (nature) alone (Bhagavad Gita 13.29). It is only when we identify ourselves with these actions that *karma* is created. For instance, actions like blood circulation in the body, or transitioning from childhood to youth, simply occur. However, due to ignorance, considering oneself as the doer of these actions makes them *karma* and binds us. Upon attaining *Tattva-Jnana* (knowledge of the ultimate truth), *Sanchita karma* is destroyed because it is founded upon ignorance. When *Jnana* dawns, the ego of doership (*Kartru Abhimana*) vanishes, hence all *Kriyamana karma* do not bear fruit. *Prarabdha karma* persists as long as the body exists, but it has no effect on the *Jnani* (the enlightened one). With the attainment of *Tattva-Jnana*, the connection with all *karma* – *Sanchita*, *Prarabdha*, and *Kriyamana* – ceases. Context -- Now, in the first half of the next verse, Bhagavan describes the glory of *Tattva-Jnana*, and in the latter half, He reveals the special significance of *Karma Yoga*.
