Bhagavad Gita Chapter 6, Verse 39

English Translation

O Krsna, You should totally eradicate this doubt of mine. For, none other than Yourself can be the dispeller of this doubt!

Detailed Commentary

**Explanation for [Verse] 6.39:** "This doubt of mine, Krishna, You are fit to dispel completely." The *sādhaka*, whose aim is the attainment of the Supreme Self (*Paramātma-prāpti*), has become entirely free from sinful actions (*pāpa-karmas*), and thus cannot go to *Naraka*. Since *Svarga* (heaven) is not his goal, he cannot go there either. He has no intention of being born in the human realm (*manushya yoni*), so he cannot enter that either, and he has also deviated from the spiritual practice (*sādhana*) for the attainment of the Supreme Self. Will such a *sādhaka* not be destroyed like a scattered cloud? This is my doubt (*saṃśaya*). "No other dispeller of this doubt exists except You." There can be no one else capable of completely dispelling this doubt. This implies that if there is any knot in the scriptures (*śāstra*), any profound subject, or a difficult verse whose meaning is not understood, a learned scholar (*vidvān*) knowledgeable in the scriptures can explain it. But what becomes of a *yogabhraṣṭa* (one who has fallen from Yoga)? A scholar cannot answer this. Yes, a *Yogi* might know it to some extent, but he cannot know the coming and going (*gati-āgati*) of all beings because he is a *yuñjāna yogi*, meaning one who has become a *Yogi* through practice (*abhyāsa*). Therefore, he can only know up to the limit of his knowledge. But You are a *yukta yogi*, meaning one who knows everything without practice, without effort. There can be no one as knowledgeable as You. You are Bhagavān Himself, and You know the *gati-āgati* of all beings. Therefore, on this matter of the *yogabhraṣṭa*, only You can answer. Only You can dispel my doubt. **Connection:** In the thirty-eighth verse, Arjuna expressed his apprehension that a *sādhaka* who has fallen from the world (*saṁsāra*) and from his spiritual practice (*sādhana*) might not suffer a downfall. To resolve this, Bhagavān speaks the next verse.
