Bhagavad Gita Chapter 8, Verse 1

अक्षर ब्रह्म योग

॥ श्लोक ॥

अर्जुन उवाच | किं तद् ब्रह्म किमध्यात्मं किं कर्म पुरुषोत्तम | अधिभूतं च किं प्रोक्तमधिदैवं किमुच्यते ||८-१||

Transliteration

arjuna uvāca . kiṃ tad brahma kimadhyātmaṃ kiṃ karma puruṣottama . adhibhūtaṃ ca kiṃ proktamadhidaivaṃ kimucyate ||8-1||

Detailed Commentary

।।8.1।। Explanation -- 'Purushottama, Kim Tad Brahman' – O Purushottama, what is Brahman? That is to say, what should be understood by the term Brahman? 'Kim Adhyātmam' – What do you mean by the term Adhyātma? 'Kim Karma' – What is Karma? That is, what is your meaning by the term Karma? 'Adhibhūtam Cha Kim Proktam' – What is the import of the term Adhibhūtam that you have spoken? 'Adhidaivam Kimuchyate' – What is called Adhidaiva? 'Adhiyajñah Katham Ko'tra Dehe'smin' – In this context, who should be understood by the term Adhiyajña? And how is that Adhiyajña in this body? 'Madhusūdana Prayāṇakāle Cha Katham Jñeyo'si Niyatātmabhiḥ' – O Madhusūdana, how can those individuals whose inner consciousness is subdued – that is, those who have withdrawn from the world and are solely devoted to You – know You at the final hour? Which form of Yours do they comprehend, and how? Connection – Now, in the following two verses, the Lord answers Arjuna's six questions in sequence.
