Transliteration

arjuna uvāca . paraṃ brahma paraṃ dhāma pavitraṃ paramaṃ bhavān . puruṣaṃ śāśvataṃ divyamādidevamajaṃ vibhum ||10-12||

English Translation

Arjuna said You are the supreme Brahman, the supreme Light, the supreme Sanctifier. All the sages as also the divine sage Narada, Asita, Devala and Vyasa [Although Narada and the other sages are already mentioned by the words 'all the sages', still they are named separately because of their eminence. Asita is the father of Devala.] call You the eternal divine Person, the Primal God, the Birthless, the Omnipresent; and You Yourself verily tell me (so).

Detailed Commentary

**10.12 Commentary** 'You are the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Abode, the Supreme Purifier' – Arjuna, while eulogizing the Lord, states that the Supreme Brahman You have spoken of, that is You. The Supreme Abode (Parama Dhama), the ultimate dwelling place in which the entire universe rests, that too is You. That which is called the most sacred, that great Sacred (Pavitram Paramam) too is You. 'You are the eternal, divine Purusha, the primal God, unborn... and You Yourself declare this to me' – In various scriptures, sages, Devarshi Narada, Asita and his son Devala Rishi, and Maharshi Vyasaji have proclaimed You as eternal (Shashvatam), divine (Divyam), the primal God (Adidevam), unborn (Ajam), and all-pervading. As the Atman, You are eternal (Shashvatam); as the Saguna-Nirakara, You are the divine Purusha; the primal God (Adideva) of devas and maharshis. The deluded ones (mudha) do not recognize You as unborn (Aja), whereas the undeluded ones (asammudha) truly understand You as Aja. In Your unmanifest (Avyakta) form, You are pervasive (vyapaka) throughout the entire universe — in this very aspect, You Yourself have spoken of Yourself as 'Vibhu' to me.
