Bhagavad Gita Chapter 11, Verse 10

English Translation

Having many faces and eyes, possessing many wonderful sights, adorned with numerous celestial ornaments, holding many uplifted heavenly weapons;

Detailed Commentary

।।11.10।। Explanation: 'Anekavaktra-nayanam' – All the faces and eyes appearing in the Virāt Rupa of the Lord are divine. All the beings seen in the Virāt Rupa, their faces, eyes, hands, feet, and other limbs, are all the Lord's own, for the Lord Himself has manifested in the Virāt Rupa. 'Anekādbhutadarśanam' – The various forms, shapes, and colors visible in the Lord's Virāt Rupa possess an astonishing and wondrous composition. 'Anekadivyābharaṇam' – The ornaments and adornments on the hands, feet, ears, noses, and necks of the forms appearing in the Virāt Rupa are all divine, for the Lord Himself has manifested in the form of these ornaments. 'Divyānekodyatāyudham' – The many kinds of *āyudhas* (weapons and arms) that the Lord, in His Virāt Rupa, holds in His hands, are all divine. 'Divyamālyāmbaradharam' – The Lord wears garlands of flowers, gold, silver, pearls, jewels, etc., around His neck. He is adorned with garments of many colors on His body, all of which are divine. 'Divyagandhānu-lepanam' – The Lord has applied *tilakas* of musk, sandalwood, *kumkum*, etc., on His forehead and ointments on His body, all of which are divine. 'Sarvāścāryamayaṁ Devam anantaṁ viśvatomukham' – Thus, the Lord revealed His infinite and astonishing form, with faces in all directions, to Arjuna. Just as a person, thinking of Haridwar and bathing in the Ganga, begins to see the Ganga, the bridge, and men and women standing on the *ghats*, though in reality, neither Haridwar nor the Ganga is there, it is merely formed in the mind. Similarly, the Lord has manifested in many forms, ornaments, *āyudhas*, garlands, and garments. Hence, everything in the Lord's Virāt Rupa is divine. It is mentioned in Śrīmad Bhāgavata that when Brahmā stole the calves and cowherd boys, Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself became the calves and cowherd boys. Not just the calves and cowherd boys, but even their staffs, horns, flutes, clothes, ornaments, etc., became the Lord Himself. Context – Now Sañjaya describes the effulgence of the *Viśvarupa*.
