Detailed Commentary
।।13.27।। Explanation: Yāvat sañjāyate... Kṣetra-Kṣetrajña-saṁyogāt – Immobile beings such as trees, vines, grasses, shrubs, reeds, bamboos, and mountains, as well as mobile beings like humans, Devas, animals, birds, insects, fish, and turtles (land-dwellers, water-dwellers, sky-dwellers), are all born only from the saṁyoga (union) of Kṣetra and Kṣetrajña. Those substances that are subject to origin and destruction are Kṣetra, and that which knows them is Kṣetrajña. Kṣetrajña, by asserting a relationship of "I" and "mine" with the body, creates this saṁyoga of Kṣetra and Kṣetrajña. Due to this relationship, the Jīva (individual soul) is compelled to take birth. This very union was previously referred to as 'Guṇasaṅga' in the twenty-first verse. This implies that by identifying with Prakṛti (Nature) and its effects, the Jīvātman also considers itself subject to birth and death. Tadviddhi Bharatarṣabha – Understand well that when Kṣetrajña asserts its relationship with the body, it takes birth. But when it does not assert its relationship, then there is no birth. Connection – In the previous verse, it was explained that by maintaining a relationship with the body, this Puruṣa (the Self) enters into the cycle of birth and death. Now the question is, what should be done to be freed from this cycle of birth and death? The Lord will provide the answer to this in the subsequent verse.
